For Consideration in Uncertain Times
Here are three articles taken from the last few weeks of Broadview, the United Church of Canada’s magazine. They offer a faith based lens into topical matters - veterans affairs, the place of the legion in the community, and our mental health during the disruptive American election.
Also, note there is a Trinity Council meeting next Tuesday, November 10th and a Pastoral Charge Meeting on Wednesday November 25th. Scroll to the bottom for further details or have a look at our calendar.
Proposed Veterans’ House aims to serve those who have already served.
The 40-unit supportive housing residence will also offer shared communal spaces that provide for veterans' unique needs.
Few parents can imagine living for years without knowing whether their child is dead or alive. But that is the experience of many families of veterans, whose loved ones often end up living on the streets of Canadian cities after struggling to transition out of the military.
Legions are the heart of Canadian communities. Will they survive the pandemic?
Dwindling membership combined with closures and financial difficulties could mark the beginning of the end for the Royal Canadian Legion.
Almost every village and town once had a local Royal Canadian Legion. They were opened as sanctuary space for veterans after one million Canadians came home from WWII. At its peak, the organization had more than 600,000 members.
How these Canadians are coping with U.S. election anxiety
From turning off the news to embracing faith and community, three people share self-care strategies. The Broadview Staff.
Canadians can’t do much to change the outcome of the U.S. presidential election, but many of us are waiting with bated breath for the results. We spoke to three people about finding different ways to cope with the anticipation and anxiety of this drawn-out presidential race that will undoubtedly have a significant impact on us as well as our neighbours to the south.
Shelburne Christmas Hampers, Compassion Close to Home
With the extra stress that the pandemic has exerted on families, the requests for the Christmas hampers this year is considerable. As a pastoral charge, we are sharing the downstairs of Trinity for four days as a place to organize the toys for the children. In addition, we are to provide 150 containers of shampoo and/or conditioner as a donation to the hampers. Each church in the community takes on a particular donation. Please bring these items to the church on the first Sundays of November and December, or organize a drop off with Ann, Gail, or myself.
If you can give financially to help out, please see details here below. Or contact those in charge directly: shelburnechristmashampers@gmail.com
