UCC: Historic Declaration to Become an Anti-Racist Church

On Saturday October 24, 2020, the Commissioners of the 43rd General Council voted to declare the denomination to become an anti-racist church. “This doesn’t mean we have achieved this goal,” explains the Moderator, the Right Rev. Richard Bott, “but we are taking a stand and saying we are publicly committed to eliminating systemic racism from our practices and policies.”

As part of the work to become an anti-racist denomination, one of the last actions of outgoing General Secretary Nora Sanders was to create a new Anti-Racism and Equity Officer position in the General Council Office. We're very pleased to announce that Adele Halliday will be taking on this role. Adele has been deeply engaged in related work in the Church in Mission Unit these past few years, and has worked within the United Church since 2004. Welcome, Adele.

UCC: Mission and Service

Each year the churches pledge to give a designated amount of money to Mission and Service, the branch of the United Church of Canada the works locally, nationally, and internationally making the compassion that is the heart of our faith into visible action. Here are a couple of videos to give you a sense of the many initiatives and ministries they oversee. We are currently well below our pledge as a pastoral charge. So if you are looking to give a gift at Christmas, give to Mission and Service through the pastoral charge.

Shelburne Christmas Hampers, Compassion Close to Home

With the extra stress that the pandemic has exerted on families, the requests for the Christmas hampers this year is considerable. As a pastoral charge, we are sharing the downstairs of Trinity for four days as a place to organize the toys for the children. In addition, we are to provide 150 containers of shampoo and/or conditioner as a donation to the hampers. Each church in the community takes on a particular donation. Please bring these items to the church on the first Sundays of November and December, or organize a drop off with Ann, Gail, or myself.

If you can give financially to help out, please see details here below. Or contact those in charge directly: shelburnechristmashampers@gmail.com
