Michael Blair on Fresh Start, Fr. Richard Rohr on the prophetic call
Besides the usual updates of meetings and fundraisers below, here is a zoom broadcast from Kingston Lambton United Church’s Fresh Start Program. Many thanks for sharing this service with us.
And Richard Rohr, who created and runs the Centre for Action and Contemplation, offers some thoughts on the prophetic call of critical thinking - much needed in their time, and much needed in ours.
Michael Blair on Kingston-Lambton United Church’s Fresh Start Zoom Service
Fresh Start welcomes Rev. Michael Blair for his sermon "Why Our Lives Matter" on John 4:1-26. Rev. Blair's sermon explores the question, "Can saying Black lives matter be a theological statement, or is it limited to a statement of solidarity with the BLM movement?"Jesus's encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well and his affirmation of her particular life, calling those who follow Jesus to affirm particular lives as well.
From the Centre for Action and Contemplation
The Hebrew prophets are in a category of their own. Within the canonical, sacred scriptures of other world religions you don’t find major texts that are largely critical of that religion. The Hebrew prophets were free to love their tradition and to criticize it at the same time, which is a very rare art form. Even today, one of the most common judgments I hear from other priests is, “You criticize the Church.” But criticizing the Church, as such, is just being faithful to the pattern set by the prophets and Jesus.
Shelburne Christmas Hampers, Compassion Close to Home
With the extra stress that the pandemic has exerted on families, the requests for the Christmas hampers this year is considerable. As a pastoral charge, we are sharing the downstairs of Trinity for four days as a place to organize the toys for the children. In addition, we are to provide 150 containers of shampoo and/or conditioner as a donation to the hampers. Each church in the community takes on a particular donation. Please bring these items to the church on the first Sundays of November and December, or organize a drop off with Ann, Gail, or myself.
If you can give financially to help out, please see details here below. Or contact those in charge directly: shelburnechristmashampers@gmail.com
