Jesus in Juxtaposition
As we approach Holy week, we approach the contradiction of the joyful welcome Jesus received on Palm Sunday, with his trial and crucifixion by the end of the week. Those who welcomed Jesus with shouts of delight were full of hope that he would rescue them from Roman oppression. When it became apparent that he would not meet power with power, perhaps they were disappointed. This may explain why those who cheered him into Jerusalem, became spectators at his death.
In fulfillment of prophetic prophecy, Jesus arrives mounted on a donkey. This is in direct opposition to the war horses the Romans rode through the streets of Jerusalem on, as a show of force. The following poem is a playful reflection on the donkey's role in this very important narrative.
Since we are assessing the opposing themes of Easter, perhaps we should take time to reflect on the matter of Jesus's ethnicity. How has it become so widely accepted throughout the world that Jesus was white? Given the geographical information of his birth and parentage, how can it be that the blonde haired, blue eyed, handsome white skinned man represented in most art, is Jesus? The article below illustrates the danger of viewing Jesus through a single lens.
Lastly, we have the lectionary notes of the sixth podcast in the SALT Lenten series. These notes help us to delve deeper into the Easter story and all its reverence and enigma.
