Mother Mary Revival

Mother Mary

It is nice to be back with our church community after a few weeks of summer break. Hopefully, the lovely weather and the colourful displays nature has been putting on in gardens, parks, forests, and meadows have been nourishment for eyes and souls.

This week we have the lectionary notes from SALT again, as they have returned from their own summer hiatus. The notes focus on how Jesus's followers react to the miraculous feeding of five thousand. We are challenged to reflect on the true meaning of communion and miracles.

In keeping with the theme of miracles, we have an article from Broadview which explores the role of Mother Mary. Over the course of history, her role in religion has been idolized, criticized for being idolized, attributed to apparitions and miracles, while also being somewhat neglected. A pop-culture revival is taking place depicting Mary as a strong and empathetic icon to a younger generation. This movement consists of people of all faiths and no faith that has put social justice at the center of its hopes for a better world.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace

by Whitney Bauck | July 30, 2021

Broadview reflects on the revival of Jesus's mother Mary in spiritual and secular circles. The revival is attributed to the recognition that despite her connection to the divine, she represents those who often get overlooked.

Miraculous Mana

In the lectionary notes this week we are reminded of the complexity of wrapping our minds around Jesus's miracles, the mystery of communion and the human reaction to these wonders. As stated in the notes, "This is a perfect week for exploring — and normalizing — the reality of doubt, confusion, skepticism, and distrust in the life of faith."
